Calorie deficit, maintenance, or surplus?

Hi all,

I've just started gyming regularly, mostly weights with some cardio as a warmup. I've spent the last few years getting down to a BMI of about 20, and I'm keen to start building more muscle to look less "soft".

My question is, my calories are still set to a deficit, but should I change that for resistance training? I'm a 22 year old female, weight 53kg, height 5'3.

Will I only see real results if I stay in a deficit?

Thanks!
