The Virtual Training Experience

I have enjoyed training in gyms as a profession for 27 years. This year, all New York gyms were forced to close by order of the State of New York. While it was damaging to the fitness industry all over the country, New York’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic was particularly devastating to businesses, especially gyms, which are still ordered to remain closed since mid-March. Personal trainers such as myself had to pivot quickly to find another direction in which to train our clients.

My wife and I call it a Blockbuster Video moment for gyms. It has become evident that this is a moment of transition for the entire fitness Industry. If we don’t apply the necessary changes with crucially swift decisiveness, parts of our industry may end up with the same fate that Blockbuster Video experienced at the hands of a changing and growing streaming industry.

With our backs against the wall, we decided to alert and persuade our clients to a new path of one-on-one, virtual training. For Apple iPhone users we use FaceTime; for Android users we use the Zoom app to connect with our clients and guide them through their workouts. Many were fortunate enough to own some fitness equipment, but for those who didn’t have any, we have been improvising with athletic bags or back packs filled with books or other heavy objects, as well as water gallons, calisthenic motions, bands, and anything that can provide resistance for the muscles. Surprisingly, the “personal” element of personal training is not detracted from the lack of physical presence. We can see our clients, and they can see us instructing them. The virtual training experience creates even more of a one-on-one experience because there are less distractions, with the exception of some very friendly pets.

So far, it has been a positive working experience, and in conjunction with my online nutrition program, we were able to continue our business despite being closed. Sadly, we will be permanently closing our gym, Remedy Fitness due to the current environment in New York. Personally and professionally, I project that only 10 to 25 percent of gym members will return to gyms when gyms are able to reopen. This percentage was the deciding factor for my family. It was 15 years of effort and hard work that made Remedy Fitness a unique fitness establishment with some of the best personal trainers, class instructors, massage therapists, physical therapists, and of course nutrition, with the guidance of the Remedy Recipes format and system for individualized meal plans. Our members were wonderful people, and together with the design of its interior and exterior, it was the best atmosphere for the promotion of fitness and wellness. I called it Remedy because I was seeking a remedy to all of the poisons of the industry, and it truly became a place that fit the name. Although we are parting with something that we created and established, we are excited to be launching our new website, remedyresults.com

This new journey is the culmination of many years of experience, fueled by a S.U.R.V.I.V.A.L. mindset that became necessary in our present situation. (See U.S. Army RANGER Handbook.)

We’re looking at it as an exciting new adventure rather than a frightening uncertainty. I often reflect on the words of Hannibal: “We will find a way, or we will make a way.”

Those are now words to live by. So, if you’re a colleague of ours in the fitness industry, don’t lose hope. We will navigate these uncharted waters and we will make maps for others to follow.

Have a safe and happy Fourth of July!!! God bless America!!!

Help a beginner out

Hi! I’m new to exercising and is currently working out low impact cardio atleast 30 minutes everyday for 5 days then then rest for 2 days. But as weeks passed by I noticed my muscles getting weaker and I’m losing energy. What advice can you give for beginners like me? Should I continue working out 5 days straight or do in between days?

I would really appreciate your insights.

First day of lifting seems too... easy?

Hi, I'm an 18 year old girl who's started lifting weights after losing a lot of weight this year! I want my body to be leaner and more toned instead of being skinny fat like I am now.

So today I started lifting. I've looked up a lot and read a lot about it, and even looked up recommended beginner routines. The writer even said the beginner routine was evidence based and may seem too easy but it's perfect for beginners. So I started doing these workouts 3 times a week, with abs and cardio in the weekends.

But after the workouts I felt sore and a little weak in my legs and arms, but felt like with enough rest I could go again! But apparently that's not recommended? I want to see progress but it just doesn't feel like I did enough to feel it. Keep in mind I'm really weak in my upper body so I didn't think it should feel like this.

Here's the routine I wrote out for today for the people interested. This is workout A which I have to do twice this week (monday and friday, workout B on wednesday):

Squats with 2 kg weights: 3 sets of 10 reps Bench presses with only the bar: 3 sets of 10 Rows with only the bar: 3 sets of 10 Calf raises: 2 sets of 12.

I felt strong enough to do 5 sets of everything except for the calf raises, I did 4 of those I believe. And still I think I could do more! I don't know if I should lift heavier as I'm absolutely dying during the workouts after like 8 reps and it takes me a lot of strength to finish it, it's just that afterwards I feel energetic enough to go again.

Keep in mind that I'm an absolute beginner and don't know anything about this. If you all think I'm overdoing it even though I feel like I'm not, then I'll listen to that and refrain from doing it again. I just want to know if I'll progress with what I'm doing now.

Thanks a lot!

Calories

What's a good food or drink to help get those last remaining calories when in a surplus. I'm currently on about 3550 calories and hate having to eat something big at the end of the day when I'm not hungry if I'm a bit short on my calories.

Unexplainable Weight Gain

I’m a 24 year old male sitting at 76.5kg. I follow a powerbuilding style of training. I started going back to the gym 2 weeks ago after they reopened in my country. Prior to that I’ve been cutting and training at home. For some reason, I have gained 1kg since going back the gym although I’m eating the same amount of calories as I was before. I’m also training more and harder at the gym, so if anything I expected to lose more weight.

Anyone know what could be causing this?

Is it normal for my lower upper body to have more body fat than my upper body which is more defined/muscular?

16M,140lb/63.5kg, 6ft. I run and weight train about 5 times per week and have been doing it for about a year now but it seems nothing has changed. I eat clean and get about 70-120g of protein per day, 50-150 carbohydrates, eat bunch of fruits, and I try to eat greens if available.

I'm doing a high volume low intensity. Is it feasible?

I'm doing bench press, shoulder press, deadlift and squats with low intensity and high reps eg. I start doing one set of deadlift of 100 reps using 10 kg. I then do 100 reps (50 X 2) using 15 kg and then I do 100 reps using 20 kg (30 X 2, 40 X 1). Then at the fourth week I do 15 kgs and 20 kgs to failure. If I manage to do 100 reps of 15 kg without a break, I'll increment the set by 5 kg. 15 kg X 100, 20 kg X 100 (50 X 2), 25 kg (30 X 2 , 40 X 1). I'm incrementing weights for deadlift and squats by 5 kgs and shoulder press and bench press by 2.5 kg. My goal is to reach 20 kg X 100 as the first set currently. I'm doing this because I don't have access to weights near my 1 RM. Is it feasible.

Miscalculation of calories!!

For the past two months I had been doing frequent workouts of every muscle group on the "Nike training club" app.obviosuly due to quarantine.

A phenomenon I struck across was miscalculation of calories.the NTC app shows a few calories but the calories shown on the GOOGLE fit are way more.

FOR EXAMPLE:- a workout known as "CORE COUNTDOWN" UPON COMPLETION on the NIKE TRAINING APP would show 70 calories.,whereas THE GOOGLE FIT app would show around 330 calories which I feel is a lot more.

Ppl I would want to know why does this occur and which calculation should I actually consider,(NTC app or GOOGLE FIT)

obé fitness review (my thoughts + are the workouts good?)

Sharing my full review of the obé fitness platform, my favorite instructors, pros, cons, and if the workouts are good. 😉

Hey friends! Hope you’re having a good morning. It’s the usual routine over here – catching a virtual barre class and then hitting the pool with the babies later if it isn’t too smoky outside. The fire in Tucson is still horrible and the smoke has clouded the city for the past few days. I’m crossing my fingers that it can be contained soon!

For today’s post, I wanted to share my thoughts on the obé fitness platform now that I’ve had some time to try different workouts and instructors. I mentioned before that signed up for obé was kind of an accident. I did the free 7-day trial because I wanted to take more of Amanda Kloots’ workouts (I’ve loved her dance cardio for years) and when I called to cancel it, it was over the weekend and the office was closed. Since I paid for a month, I kept trying more classes, and called to cancel it and they gave me a sweet deal for the following month. So, here we are, and I have to say, I’ve really enjoyed some of the workouts I’ve found.

obé fitness review

What is obé fitness?

It’s an online fitness platform featuring 26-minute workouts in three different segments:

Sweat – cardio-focused workouts, like HIIT training, dance cardio, choreography, and bounce (a trampoline-based workout)

Define- strength classes with light or heavy weights, barre, and Pilates

Flow- yoga and stretch classes

They also offer longer 45-minute classes for each section.

Similar to Peloton, they have a live schedule, where you can tune in to take classes live, as well as many On Demand workouts.

obe fitness review with pros and cons. fitnessista.com

What to expect:

The vibe for obé classes is fun and fresh. The instructor leads class, surrounded by pastel-colored walls and the set-up is fairly simple; you don’t see any flashing lights or distractions. You can choose a workout based on your goals (I highly recommend the dance cardio classes) and follow along from anywhere. The platform feels very “LA” with the emphasis on dance cardio, barre, and yoga. These are classes that I personally love, so I was excited to have more options to try (and also learn some new teaching moves!) while we’ve been at home.

The cost for obé fitness is $27 per month or $199 billed on an annual basis.

Pros:

– No need for crazy equipment or space. Many of the workouts can be done either with your own bodyweight or a set of light or heavy dumbbells. I like how attainable this is, especially for those who are working out at home right now.

– Short workout time! I feel like 26 minutes is workout sweet spot. You can get in an awesome workout without feeling like you’re making a huge time commitment, and if you’re feeling up to it, you have the option to take a longer 45-minute class.

– Fun instructors. There are a handful of instructors that I LOVE. Walter K., Peter, Michelle B., and Amanda Kloots (of course) are my very faves. They’re motivating without feeling drill seargent-y or too intense.

obe fitness review with pros and cons. fitnessista.com

Cons:

– I can’t help but compare everything to Les Mills, but I feel like some of the instructors/classes are lacking experience and/or concrete planning. I’ve taken a couple of classes that didn’t feel like they were effective or well-planned to me, and also lacked proper form cues or engaging motivation besides, “Good job!” but that’s just me being extra picky. At the same time, I’ve taken classes that were awesome and felt extremely well-planned. It’s just a little more hit or miss than I would prefer.

– Sometimes the 26 minutes feels TOO short, but that’s a good thing. The Dance HIIT classes with Walter K. fly by!

Will I keep my subscription?

I’m still trying to decide. $27 feels a bit high for me, especially when Les Mills is only $14.99 and the quality and amount of workouts is much higher. I’ve also been paying for Peloton (which we love!), Sweat App, and a monthly On Demand subscription to Barre Body (<— where I used to teach in San Diego!). These fitness apps add up lol. I think it’s definitely worth checking out obé during the free trial to see if you like it!

So tell me, friends: what’s your favorite app or online resource for workouts?

xo

Gina
