Moronic Monday - Your weekly stupid questions thread

Get your dunce hats out, Fittit, it's time for your weekly Stupid Questions Thread.

Post your question - stupid or otherwise - here to get an answer. Anyone can post a question and the community as a whole is invited and encouraged to provide an answer. Many questions get submitted late each week that don't get a lot of action, so if your question didn't get answered before, feel free to post it again.

As always, be sure to read the FAQ first.

Also, there's a handy-dandy search bar to your right, and if you didn't know, you can also use Google to search fittit by using the limiter "site:reddit.com/r/fitness".

Be sure to check back often as questions get posted throughout the day. Lastly, it may be a good idea to sort comments by "new" to be sure the newer questions get some love as well. Click here to sort by new in this thread only.

So, what's rattling around in your brain this week, Fittit?

As per this thread, the community has asked that we keep jokes, trolling, and memes outside of the Moronic Monday thread. Please use the downvote / report button when necessary.

Family movie night + latest adventures

Sharing a themed Ratatouille family dinner and movie night + what we’ve been up to lately.

Hi friends. I hope you had a lovely weekend. Thank you so much for your outpouring of love and sweet comments, DMs, and emails about Bella’s diagnosis. Even though she’s had a very long and happy life, surrounded by people who love her and just want to feed her the chicken she desires, I’m still gutted by the news. I talked to her wonderful vet tech for for a while on Friday and he gave us an idea of how this will progress and things to look out for. (Basically I need to make her food as appetizing as possible so she’ll keep eating.)

It was a rough week and to add to the fun, I threw out my back. I saw a chiropractor hoping for sweet relief but she only used the little hand clicky thing and it didn’t help. I’m seeing another chiro tomorrow with hopes that she’ll hold me like a baby, pop everything into place, and I can be normal again. (I throw my back out maybe once every 2-3 years and it’s horrible. I’ve been hobbling around since last Wednesday and crying over Bella. I’m a hot mess, let me tell ya.)

One of the few things to get me out of this funk was a family movie night that we’d planned a while back. Before you think I’m creative and crafty, I cannot take credit for this cute idea. One of my friends (a real-life Pinterest mom) has been hosting themed movie nights for her kiddos each week. I thought the girls would love this, so I planned a movie night around Ratatouille – a light-hearted movie that we all enjoy.

I created a menu and movie tickets,

(just made these on Canva)

Ordered some chef hats from Amazon,

and we feasted on grapes, cheese, and homemade sourdough, Remy’s potato soup (recipe is here and it was AWESOME. I used almond milk instead of the cream), classic ratatouille (my first time making it) and movie candy. It was such an easy at-home activity and a fun way to switch up the usual movie night. The girls have already requested their next selections. 🙂 We’re going to do Princess and the Frog this week!

Over the weekend, we had our usual girls’ weekend fun (the Pilot was out of town). P had horseback lessons (she’s getting so good and loves it!), Liv had dance, we met up with friends for dinner at the pool, and Saturday was my dad’s birthday.

We love hanging out over there and the girls always have a blast swimming and playing in the playroom. We feasted on Mexican food, sang, “Happy Birthday” to my dad, and ate volcano for dessert.

This week, we’re back into the swing of things. It’s nice to have a little bit of a routine and predictability even though distance learning has still been a bit tricky. How are you guys doing with the distance learning thing? Any tips or things that are working well for you? I just feel like it’s not a lot of actual instruction and a lot of work/assignments.

Any fun weekly things you’ve done with the kiddos to give everyone something to look forward to? The girls loved weekly “sleep in a tent” nights until the novelty wore off a few months later. 😉 Family movie night is taking the place for now.

Happy Monday and I’ll see ya in the am with a post on how to set up your Peloton or any spin bike.

xo

Doing the compound lifts first thing in a set or not for max muscle growth

Just started a program by John meadows and the compound movements are always the 2nd exercise of the workout after a "easier" but still hard exercise, does this help to prevent injury in cost of a little of muscle gain? What are your thoughts

Wrist wraps breaking

Hey guys have gotten 2 different brands of wrist wraps, I am still getting used to the cut in circulation and have to remove them every 1 or 2 sets and then back again. Both of them broke, one of them the Velcro broke and the other the thumb strap broke. Can it be because I am tightening them too tight? Wrapping them and unwrapping too much per day? Or did I just get shitty ass brands?

have a great day.

Alternate Your Rep Range for Better Results

For many years, I have alternated my repetition range from week to week with outstanding results. The main objective for my approach is the stimulation of the muscle fibers by exposing them to different types of stresses from week to week. Each week of the month consists of a different approach such as Week 1: 30 repetitions, Week 2: Supersets, Week 3: Drop Sets, and Week 4: Heavy.

In Week 1, I use a weight that is lighter but will still create stress on the muscle fibers, usually by the 20th repetition. It provides a severe stress to the muscle bellies without the stress being dissipated to tendons and ligaments.

In Week 2, I’ll superset using a rep range of 15 repetitions and 15 repetitions divided between two different muscle groups. For example, I’ll do 15 pull-ups supersetted with 15 lateral deltoid dumbbell raises, and repeat for two rounds.

In Week 3, my rep range is performed in a drop set of seven repetitions each, totaling 21 repetitions, dropping down from the heaviest weight to a medium weight, to a lighter weight.

In Week 4, I will generally keep a 3-6 repetition range for heavy, power movements such as deadlifts, squats, bench press, and clean and press.

There are several advantages to my approach. Alternating the rep range exposes the fibers to a variety of stresses. It prevents the muscles from adapting to a continuous routine that may, in time, feel like one is “going through the motions.” It benefits the joints, tendons, and ligaments with rest on the higher rep range weeks, while preparing and conditioning the muscles for the stress of heavier lifts. Finally, it makes exercise less monotonous and more interesting, presenting the body and the mind with challenges and stimulation.

I have also trained my clients with this approach for many years. They have seen great success and improvement as well, while reducing risk for injury by allowing proper rest for their joints, tendons, and ligaments. Most have expressed that they have their favorite week and enjoy the transition from week to week as well. I’ll be honest, most clients dislike 30s Week because of the severe burn from the high rep range, but I put them through it anyway! Give my approach a try for a month to see how you feel. Alternating your rep range may give you the results that you are looking for, while keeping your workouts interesting!

Will my routine get me to were I want to be?

M/18 5’9” SW:230 CW: 175 GW: 148

So, I wanted to ask if the way my program is set will help me achieve my goal of a six pack/ lean physique?

Nutrition:

I eat 1900 calories a day. And I make sure to get .8-1 gram of protein per body weight. I eat relatively clean meals mainly consisting of homemade oat protein pancakes, chicken breast, and fish. I usually get around 143grams of protein each day, and keep my carbs moderate as well as my fats. I don’t eat out, but on the rare occasion I do I always make sure to log it and never overindulge. I do not follow IF because I tend to want to binge my meals if I do not eat breakfast, I have tried it before but it’s not my preferred approach.

Exercise:

I follow a PPL split 7 days a week. I mainly focus on compound movements such as squat, incline bench press, and deadlifts. I have recently increased my cardio and now I do 30 min walks every morning after breakfast. I do not do direct abdominal training as I am at too high of a body fat percentage to see them, so when I get to around 17% I will begin to train them directly.

I did not include the details because then this post would be super long, but that is a general guide to what I do and live my life. Fitness is the only thing in years that I have been dedicated to which is why even though I am not seeing significant results I continue to work hard. I don’t know if my issue is that I need more patience. I realized a month into my weight lifting journey that 95% of the guys you see and hear from in the industry are taking some type of PED. I will eventually be taking some, but not for another three years as I want to optimize my natural potential as much as possible. Also I tend to loose around 1 to 1.5 pounds of body weight a week. Any advice would be appreciated 🍀

Squats and running - can you fit both into your training?

I squat an average of twice a week and lately have taken up running a bit more seriously.

Is it counter productive to do both? I definitely struggle with my run if it is the day after squatting.

I know I will never be elite at either but I train more for health benefits and aesthetics than excelling at one thing.

Hair routine + fave products for healthy hair

Per a couple of requests, I updated this older post with my current hair routine and tips.

Hi friends! Happy Monday! I hope you’re enjoying the week so far. I’m looking forward to catching outdoor yoga class tonight – my first group fitness class since March!!- and taking it easy with the fam.

For today, I thought we could chat about hair. I’ve been asked to share some of my favorite hair products + the latest hair routine and thought it would be a fun kinda different post. My hair has been through so many crazy stages over the past six years. From luxurious pregnancy hair, to postpartum shredding + regrowth (the lovely Frankenstein baby bangs), changes in texture (my hair got super wavy after I had P! We joke that it’s because the reflux and everything stressed me out that much) and environment (beach air, dry desert air, and swampy humidity), and getting rid of anesthesia from my system 3 times (<— which can make you shed and your hair do funky things).

(trying to decide if I should keep my current blond-ish highlights or go dark again for fall!)

Just this past year, my hair started growing like crazy. I feel like I’d hit a growth slump, and would often have to get a trim merely because the ends were shaggy; never because it was “too long.” While I’ve been working hard to take care of it, I also think that getting my implants out a few years ago and decreasing the inflammation in my body has made a positive impact. I’ve been taking a couple of new supplements that I think have helped and I think it’s responded positively to the super low-key approach I’ve had lately.

Here are some of the things I do to keep my hair healthy:

-Supplement. I used to take a prenatal vitamin, but instead, I currently take a mix of different things: a liver supplement (that has Biotin in it), vitamin b12, vitamin C, D3/K2 and an adaptogen blend.

I also have a scoop of collagen either in my [decaf] cup of coffee or smoothie.

Collagen has been hyped up for a long time, but it wasn’t until I took it on a regular basis that I noticed a difference. My skin looks smoother, and my hair and nails are noticeable stronger. It doesn’t taste like anything, so it’s easy to add into hot or cold drinks. You can check out more about collagen and why I love it in this post.

Products for healthy long hair

I also take MCT oil (usually in my smoothie or coffee) for a quick dose of healthy fat. You get the the huge bottle at Thrive Market.

-Watch the heat! This one is hard for me because I like showers that literally burn my skin. Like, I want it to feel like burning lava. When I take a super hot shower, I bring the temp down to wash my hair. My mom is a hair stylist and has always told me to rinse my hair with cold water because it closes the hair follicle and makes it more shiny. I’ve actually started listening to this advice. 😉 I just turn the water to ice cold before I get out of the shower and lean my head back so the freezing ice water doesn’t touch my body. Bonus: cold showers can help the lymphatic system, too.

When I know I’m going to heat-style my hair, either with a blowdryer or styling wand, I pick 1 thing to use for heat styling. So, if I’m going to round-brush it with a blowdryer, that’s it. If I know I’m going to curl it, I let it air dry first, so I’m not doubling up on hot tools.

-Get regular trims. This one is tricky with the kiddos and with the current situation, but I’ve noticed a difference in my ends since I started getting regular trims. In normal circumstances, I try to go every 4-6 or so. For now, I’ve had one trim since January and am super overdue for a new one.

(When salons re-opened, I masked up for some highlights and a trim just to feel like myself again. This was a couple of months ago.)

-Don’t wash it a lot. I wash it 2x a week max. If I need to take a shower because I got a sweaty workout or hit up the pool, I’ll rinse my hair with water and just put conditioner or a mask on the ends. I think shampoo can be really abrasive and drying, and if you shampoo every day, it can make things crispy fast.

While I don’t wash my hair a ton, thankfully my hair doesn’t get too greasy – it will get a little dandruff snow if it’s been a while – but dry shampoo comes to the rescue. I’ve tried SO MANY, but this one and this one top the list.

Products for healthy long hair | fitnessista.com | #healthyhair

Favorite hair products:

-Moroccan oil: I’ve been using this for years, and it’s the best ever. I’ve tried the light and really like it but prefer the heavier oil. We’ve also been using it on the girls since they were toddlers. 😉 We never have to use detangler on their super long hair because Moroccan oil does the trick.

-Hair mask. This is my #1 favorite hair product. It makes SUCH a huge difference in the texture of my hair! My stylist in San Diego first recommended the Kerastase mask to me (the one in the pink jar), and I couldn’t believe how smooth and silky it made my hair. It was pricey but well worth it. Since then, I’ve tried a few different ones and really like the Loreal silicone-free. The only bummer about good hair masks is that you have to get them from a licensed salon for the most part. I’d hop into one (especially if you have a local salon with Kerastase products) and see what they recommend for your hair.

-Heat protectant. This is another huge one. I love the Drybar Hot Toddy and the Kerastase Discipline.

-Hairdryer, styling wand, and Revlon styler. I use the Revlon styler after my hair is about 80% dry if I want straight smooth hair. I’ll finish it off with the Drybar round brush and my regular hairdryer. When I want waves, I’ll let it air dry and fix the crazy pieces with this styling wand.

So, tell me friends: what’s your hair routine like? What are some of your fave products? A friend of mine swears by using apple cider vinegar instead of shampoo, but I’m scared to try it.

Any crazy hair stories?

I have two:

-When I was little, I would cut off chunks of my hair and hide them in my toy box. My mom quickly noticed what I was doing.

-My friend wanted me to dye her hair blonde in high school. I didn’t know you had to bleach it first, so I just covered her hair in blonde dye. The roots were the only thing that took the color, so she looked like she was wearing a bald cap with hair sticking out. She cried, and I felt like the worst friend ever. Thankfully, madre fixed it.

Have a great day and I’ll see ya soon!

xo

Does cardio fitness gained from running translate to other physical activities?

Hey guys if i run and improve my cardio that way will it translate to other activities such as hard manual labour e.g. splitting wood, carrying heavy stuff etc or will it just improve my running endurance, because i noticed i get winded and sweat like a pig before my muscles/strength ever fail me.
