Squats and running - can you fit both into your training?

I squat an average of twice a week and lately have taken up running a bit more seriously.

Is it counter productive to do both? I definitely struggle with my run if it is the day after squatting.

I know I will never be elite at either but I train more for health benefits and aesthetics than excelling at one thing.
