Why does lifting heavier not feel as effective as going low volume higher reps?

I learnt through friends and online posts that

High Volume + Less Reps = Strength & Low Volume + High Reps = Aesthetics/Conditioning

My question is, whenever I do a compound movement let’s say 5x5 I don’t really feel like I’m getting stronger, or maybe I’m just not feeling as sore as I would for a higher rep set. I want to get stronger for track, so I was wondering should I continue my high volume and less Reps? Or switch back to higher reps?
