Starting low and working up to max?

Hey all,

I just signed back up for the gym and, like most, I haven't lifted since March. I follow the Westside for Skinny Bastards program and have for a couple of years, I like the structure of it.

One problem I've ran into more than once is that after a long break from lifting, which has occasionally happened, I jump back into these work outs and do as much weight as I can at the assigned reps.

So I worked out this way my first day back, doing as much weight as I could. I felt absolutely fine during the work out. The next day I was BEYOND exhausted, like I slept 10 hours overnight and I still woke up feeling like I had hardly slept and needed more. That night after, I also had extreme insomnia and couldn't fall asleep until about 3:30 AM.

As I was saying, this has happened to me in the past. It usually takes me 3-4 days of not doing any physical activity to recover. Would I be better off easing into my program by purposely starting with lower weight but for the same prescribed reps? I feel like my body doesn't adapt well when I jump right into my max weights, I've even gotten sick before shortly after work outs like this because I feel like my immune system drops.
