Are there any benefits to restricting air intake while exercising?

I was just wondering if there were any proven benefits to restricting air intake while exercising, i.e: only breathing through your nose, or only breathing slowly.

I was thinking that it maybe had the same effect as high altitude training; that the body and lungs get used to less oxygen and it adapts in a benefitial way.

Is there any science behind doing so, and is that something one should start doing?
