Can you lift too heavy for your bones/joints, even if you can still physically do it?

Ive worked a lot of labour jobs but i am still very new to the gym. I tried some dumbell side lateral raises for 30lbs and while i can get high reps with proper form i find my shoulders still hurt right down to the bone, and a little more after each rep.

So even if your muscle can handle a weight, is it possible your joints are not ready yet? Thanks!
