Fitness secret course

My body can't do certain ab exercises. Is there a way to train myself to get there or should I look elsewhere?

It seems mostly to the be ones laying back with elevated legs such as toe touches or chair situps. I wind up bending just below my ribs and barely getting an inch off the ground which does absolutely nothing for me. I've tried and tried but I cannot bend at the waist. Is there something I'm doing wrong?
