What can I replace barbell squats with if I don't have access to a rack?

So umm I have been following the /Fitness Basic Beginner Routine for a month now, but the problem is, the gym that I have access to doesn't have a squat rack, and I have been doing the squat lift on a Smith machine. As it turns out, I just learned that the Smith is not only sub optimal but also dangerous to do squats with it, do I would rather look for an alternative exercise than using it. So yeah, what do you guys suggest as an alternative that works just the same for the aforementioned program?
