How can I get into Olympic lifts as a teen?

I’m 15 years old and I’ve been lifting for about a year now. I lift for strength and I do a good amount of auxiliary work but I focus on the big lifts.

I’ve always loved watching Olympic weightlifting and I really really want to learn how to clean and jerk and snatch. I don’t want to compete but I want to do these lifts. I know they are probably not very beneficial for me but I still want to learn and train them.

I’ve never had coaching but I’ve had no problems teaching myself proper form for deadlifts and squats with the Internet and self recording but I know Olympic lifts are a thousand times more technical. I want to know if it’s possible to learn Olympic lifts that way. There’s no way I can get coaching I work out at a home gym and my parents already spend a lot of money on me because of other things I’m involved in.

Is it stupid to want to learn them? And if it’s possible what’s the best way to go about it?

Not Feeling Plate Pinch Presses in Chest

I'm temporarily switching out bench pressing for pinch plate pressing, as I've been feeling a slight strain in my shoulder when I bench press these days, and want to lay off my shoulder for a while and let it heal without sacrificing training my chest.

The problem, though, is that I'm not feeling the plate pinch press in my chest like I'm supposed to. Instead, my forearms get tired from pinching the plates before I even feel anything in my chest. If I lower the weight enough that my forearms don't get tired, then I can do a million of them and probably am not moving a heavy enough weight to train my chest. If I increase the weight, I still don't feel it in my chest, but my arms can barely hold the plate parallel, and I can barely extend my arms all the way when pushing.

What am I doing wrong?

Friday Faves

Hi friends! Happy Friday! How was the week? Ours went by in a blur… I feel like the holidays are flying at warp speed right now. Usually I have everything ordered and figured out, but this year the kids are making it a little tricky haha. They’re changing their Santa gift requests every day (and some of them are completely made up, like P said she wants stuffed ducks with their own little swimming pool) and I’m over here scratching my head. I’ve also been trying to order gifts when they’re not standing behind my shoulder or asking me for a snack every 15 seconds. 😉  Things are just a little different this year to say the least. (My watch just told me to “Breathe” while typing that sentence.)

I’m looking forward to the weekend with the crew! We’re going to decorate our giant Christmas tree. (We got a real one for the first time ever!! I’ll post pics soon.) The Pilot was gone this week and got back late last night, just in time to pop some Prosecco with me. He’s been in the process of completely emptying our garage so we can park the cars in there again and utilize the gym space more efficiently. It’s going to feel great when it’s finished.

Some Black Friday and Cyber Monday finds have arrived and they’ve all been hits. We ordered a new classic Vitamix – mine bit the dust a couple of years ago, so I’ve been mostly using my tiny Vitamix – and I’m so excited to use it this weekend. We ordered the Always Pan, which is AMAZING,

HigherDOSE sauna blanket review

and I was influenced by Brittany into splurging on this sauna blanket from HigherDOSE. I’ve tested it out twice and it’s a dream come true. I’m usually cold, so I tend to gravitate towards anything warm and toasty. This is why we live at the pool all summer and why I’m a huge fan of super sweaty hot yoga classes. I’d been toying with investing in a real sauna since we can’t go to our usual option (it’s closed because of ‘Rona) and thought this would be the perfect alternative.

HigherDOSE sauna blanket review

Here’s how it works:

– You preheat the blanket for about 10 minutes. They recommend starting it around a level 5 and adjusting the heat slowly if you don’t sweat after a while. They don’t recommend level 9 unless you’re unable to sweat at level 8 (which seems bananas to me because I was at a 6 and it was perfectly hot).

– You wear cotton and loose-fitting clothing. I wore lightweight jogger pants, a long-sleeved tee, and my Frida Kahlo socks. 🙂 It felt warm and comfy and I was surprised to see how much I was sweating after 20 minutes!

– It’s super easy to clean. I just use the same wipes I use on my Peloton bike and let the blanket cool for at least 30 minutes before folding it up to store.

– There’s a list of contraindications on the brochure, and one is that you shouldn’t use the blanket if you have any type of implant in the body. Glad I got my implants out 😉

– Benefits: there are quite a few benefits of using infrared technology and saunas, but my main reasons for getting this blanket were for relaxation, detoxification (some may argue that it’s a myth but I’m a huge believer in the cleansing properties of sweat), and immune system benefits.

– I’ll probably use it 2-3 times a week on the nights I can get the kids to bed earlier. You can’t multi-task while you’re in there, but you can absolutely watch Netflix or listen to a podcast.

It’s time for some faves from the week and around the web! I’d love to hear about your faves, too, so please shout out something you’re loving in the comments section below.

Fashion + beauty:

Beautycounter Mini Skin Stars! This set consists of mini versions of three of my very favorite products. You’ll get the bestselling overnight peel, all bright C serum (prob my #1 fave right now), and brightening facial oil (with hydrating botanical oils). These are the perfect trial size if you haven’t sampled these yet, and you can also use them for travel or to stash in your makeup bag. Check them out there!

Liv said these shoes are terrible, but I love them! Plus, they were a steal at Target for $17.

If you’re still shopping for the holidays check out these gift guides supporting small businesses, this gift guide for her, and these gift ideas for the kids. I’ll share my gift guide for the guys on Monday!

Fitness + good eats:

This truffle power from Trader Joe’s. You guyyyyyyyss. If you have a TJ’s near you, pick up a jar of this magic. It’s so delicious on baked French fries (the best), eggs, and veggies. I can’t help but feel a little fancypants when I use it, too. It’s the little things, right?

Check out this fitness advent calendar for workout surprises leading up to Christmas.

We were out of Thanksgiving leftovers by Sunday, but I had this beloved sandwich three days in a row. It’s gluten-free sprouted bread, Kite Hill cream cheese, turkey, cranberry sauce, and gluten-free stuffing. This is my favorite sandwich in the entire world and I look forward to it all year long.

This veggie korma looks like a dream.

Bodyweight glute and ab workout.

I hosted a FREE barre class via Zoom on Tuesday and it was so much fun. It felt so great to blast some music and actually teach! (Filming videos is so different than interacting with real people in real time and it reminded me of how much I miss group fitness.) I’m doing a live HIIT and Strength workout this Thursday. If you want to get the details for when I host these live classes, make sure you’re on my newsletter list here!

Functional circuits total body workout.

Read, watch, listen:

This made me LOL.

What’s your most embarrassing moment?

An interesting podcast about how stress is affecting our immune systems.

Has anyone watched all of Holidate? I started it one night while the Pilot was away and was wondering if it was worth finishing or if I’d be wasting my life.

Happy Friday, friends!

7 Healthy Holiday Food Swaps

When it comes to holiday meals, we tend to forget about the healthy diet and lifestyle choices we make the rest of the year in favor of whatever is put in front of us, which is completely okay. There is no harm in enjoying in a holiday meal; however, sometimes, we overdo it and wish we had used a little more discretion to avoid the stuffed and bloated feeling.

To have a healthier holiday, you don’t have to throw all your traditional favorites out the window. Instead, you can make a few swaps to just a few of the dishes on the menu and still make a dent in your calorie intake (and guilt too)! Here are seven healthy holiday food swaps that taste just as good as the traditional offerings:

7 Healthy Holiday Food Swaps - Switch ups that taste as good as the original

1. Swap Creamy Dip and Chips For Hummus and Fresh Cut Veggies

Creamy dips, an appetizer favorite, made from full fat sour cream or cream cheese pack a whole lot of calories! Before you know it, a few scoops of dip could add up to more calories than should be consumed in one meal. Instead of creamy dip and chips, save your calories for the main course and try eating fresh cut veggies with hummus. Made with chickpeas, olive oil, garlic, lemon juice and tahini, hummus is packed with the good stuff and only provides 1g of fat per tablespoon!

2. Swap Mashed Potatoes For Mashed Cauliflower

Just replacing mashed potatoes with mashed cauliflower is the first step to saving unnecessary calories. A 1-cup serving of potatoes delivers 113 calories and 2 g of fiber; whereas, a 1-cup serving of cauliflower provides just 25 calories and 3 g of fiber. To save even more calories, skip over the cream and butter, and use roasted garlic, olive oil, salt, pepper and rosemary or fresh chives.

3. Swap Dark Turkey Meat For White Turkey Meat

Dark turkey meat is tempting and tasty, but it also has whole lot more fat and calories! A serving of skinless turkey breast meat provides 30 g of protein, 2 g of fat and only 147 calories; whereas, dark turkey meat provides the same amount of protein but 206 calories and a whopping 10 g of fat! And that’s only if you stick to one helping!

4. Swap Bread Stuffing For Rice Stuffing

Bread just adds unnecessary calories and carbs we don’t need. Instead of bread stuffing made with butter and white bread, try making a rice stuffing using wild rice, sticky rice or quinoa. Sauté mushrooms, onion, celery and garlic with coconut oil or olive oil. Then, add dried fruit and nuts, like pecans or walnuts.

5. Swap Cranberry Sauce For Cranberry Relish

Since cranberries are sour and bitter, they are sweetened with a whole lot of sugar or corn syrup, if you buy it from the can. Instead of eating cranberry sauce, try making your own cranberry relish using natural sugar alternatives like Stevia or naturally sweet fruit juices like orange or pineapple, along with zest from fresh orange and lemon. A two-tablespoon serving of cranberry relish made with Stevia and an orange will provide just 28 calories per serving and only 7 g of carbs; a store bought cranberry sauce will deliver 86 calories and 22 g of pure sugar!

6. Swap Alcohol For Soda Spritzers

Not only does alcohol provide empty calories, it can make us feel hungry causing us to eat even more! Alcohol is also considered a toxin in the body and causes the body to stop all other metabolic processes until it is completely removed from the body. If you still want to indulge with some holiday cheer, reduce the amount of alcohol you are consuming by watering it down with club soda or a clear diet pop. A full glass of wine can provide about 120 calories; however, if you cut that glass in half with soda water, you will save yourself 60 calories!

7. Swap The Christmas Cookies For Fruit With Dark Chocolate Fondue

Sure, its once a year when these tasty treats come around, but just a few Christmas cookies will skyrocket blood sugar and push your daily calorie consumption over the edge. Instead of cookies, pies, squares or whatever else is put in front of you, try making a dark chocolate fondue. Use a dark chocolate with a minimum cacao content of 70%, add Stevia to sweeten instead of extra sugar and a bit of coconut milk to thicken, and then serve it with fresh cut fruit!
