Why does a simple 5x5 work on some lifts and not others?

A simple 5x5 2-3times a week worked great for my squat. But not so much for my bench, and it onlly seems to improve if I add in tricep accessories. What gives? Why do some exercisese respond well to just doing the exercise itself while others need more help?
